Christians and historical fiction

Tell me what you think:

I want to write my senior project on the nature and history of historical fiction (and, vis-à-vis, fictional history), the debate surrounding its credibility, and examples of well-researched and well-presented historical fiction. Specifically, I hope to discuss Christian historical fiction (i.e. novels written by Christians about elements of church/Biblical history) and the role it’s played in the historical and literary consciousness of the Church. I am additionally interested in the discussion of this literary genre as it reflects on the work of Christian historians and historiographers.

  1. good concept, espcially since the majority of Christian fiction falls into the historical fiction category.

You do have your work cut out for you though, good luck!

  2. there would certainly be a great deal of material to draw from... the only trouble would be the many directions you could take it.

is all history a kind of fiction, written to illuminate present concerns? is historical fiction the same, a way to justify or condemn current ways of life based on some historical precedent?

What's your general hypothesis? do you hope to sketch some guidelines for what qualifies as "good" historical fiction?

maybe it could be narrowed by focusing on 3 authors as representatives of various strands. Or a focus on a particular time period (the puritans, the reformation, WWII & state of Israel, the civil war, etc)
